Brian Counihan

Brian Counihan grew up in the Republic of Ireland and received a degree in painting and printmaking from Crawford School of Art in Cork. Before leaving Ireland, he won that country's first top portrait award and was invited to participate in an exhibition of Irish art in Turin, Italy.

He has a BA in art history summa cum laude from Northwestern University, where he also received an interdisciplinary Masters Degree with the top academic Dipple award for his Masters thesis.

Rooted in the painterly traditions of modernism and engaged in the postmodern fascination with the unconscious structures of language, his paintings combine random cultural fragments like mixed metaphors in ways that suggest complex narratives.

He is artist in residence, dean of arts and a founding faculty member of Community High, School of Arts & Academics in Roanoke.
